Jan Harris Smith
I can’t remember when art was not a part of my life…my refuge, my muse, a friend and constant in my nomadic life as the child of a military family. Born in Texas, I have lived in 9 different states before calling Utah home. My travels have informed my art.
I work primarily in glass and metal, creating dimensional art. I began working with fused glass in 2006, after taking a short introductory class. I loved the play of colors and light and the versatility of glass and was immediately hooked on the process. I especially enjoy the interplay of reactive glasses and using my glass in the jewelry I create.
I started working in metal in college, working with non-ferrous metals to create jewelry and other small objects, and in 2014, I added welding to my skills. I love to combine glass and metal, juxtaposing light and opacity. My designs tend towards being organic, reflecting my great love for nature.
I have been teaching art classes for the past 22 years, teaching classes across the United States and Australia at various art retreats, as well as art centers and art stores. I currently teach introductory classes in fused glass and metalsmithing at the Kimball Art Center in Park City, UT and Pioneer Craft House in Salt Lake City, UT. My art has been published in magazines and books. In, addition I have won several awards for my artwork over the years.
I am always happy to answer any question you may have regarding my artwork. I can be contacted at firstname.lastname@example.org.
